Siport21 collects available LNG Bunkering operation guidelines

The port-maritime engineering company, Siport21, has presented a paper called “State of Art of LNG Bunkering”, collecting the main guidelines about Liquified Natural Gas bunkering operations in Spain and internationally.

In the last years, new necessities and regulations have been developed to promote LNG as a fuel in maritime transport. For this reason, a new technology has been developed for its supply to vessels.

Nowadays, the first bunkering operations have been carried out applying the experience in maritime transport and transfer operations of LNG. Although, in most of the cases, a specific facility or the adaptation of an existing terminal has been necessary. Also, the complexity of the compatibility between vessels has been considered. For this reason, new guidelines are being written in order to control the LNG supply and in the next years new updates will for sure be developed.

These guidelines deal with different supply types (PTS, TTS, STS, CTS) and they detail aspects related to procedures, equipment, compatibility, risk assessment, simultaneous operations, etc.

Main guidelines collected in this paper were published by International Maritime Organization (IMO); International Organization for Standardization (ISO); The Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators(SIGTTO); Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF); Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIFM); European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA); The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC); Spanish Port Authority and Official State Bulletin and Iberian association for gas-powered mobility (GASNAM).

Nowadays, Siport21 was joined Working Groups on LNG Bunkering of the Spanish PIANC Section and GASNAM, with the aim to stay informed of all the updates in this topic and contribute with their international experience in LNG projects and FSRU specifically (LNG STS transfer, ship to ship).
